throat tube: anyone else?

Question:

This is pretty standard when you get general anesthesia.  Easy on the talking for a bit, it will pass.  Humidified air can help (you know, the old pan of boiling water – off the stove – with a towel over your head. Breath in the moist air – a few times a day)

Response:

There is also a nasal gastric tube, that helps people that are unable to get food down, or are obstructed in their bowels…..doesn’t have to be an ET tube! Janis (RT)(M)_

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I thought the throat tube WAS an airway? If you have surgery again ask for a general anesthetic without intubation. They can just use an airway. I did that for my 2md mast and had no throat discomfort like I did the 1st time. The throat tube, usually called an endotracheal tube, is an airway, but different from the gadget usually called an airway.  The latter is a molded piece of hard plastic that curves over the back of the tongue and has grooves in the side large enough to carry air in and out of the lungs.  It stops short of the vocal cords and thus does not enter the trachea.  The vocal cords are the narrow point and are more likely to be injured, while the linig of the trachea is more delicate than that at the back of the throat above the vocal cords.  Try inhaling popcorn for a demonstration of that!

No problem with the incisions or anything else…no pain since the biopsies. but this damned THROAT TUBE they used during anesthesia (without telling me beforehand)…more than72 hours after the procedure my throat is still on FIRE!  NSAIDs don’t work, gargling doesn’t work, rest hasn’t worked.  MAN!

Yeah, the throat tube always bothers me, too.  I promise, it WILL get better.  Worst case is they scraped you a little when they inserted or removed it.  Sometimes it happens. Blame it on a litigious society.  Once upon a time, they only intubated very obese people or people they knew had breathing problems.  Now, so scared of being sued, they intubate everyone and you can’t talk them out of it, no matter how many releases you promise to sign. — Aloha, Catharine Character is what you do when no one’s watching.

Response:

thanks, finally better today, just in time for me to go have a root canal ( a REPEAT root canal on the same tooth, and only a 50/50 chance this one will be successful, but I gotta try, want to save the molar if possible).. thanks for reassurance.

You might ask your doctor about trying the corticosteroid inhalers that asthmatics use.  Flovent (fluticasone) is one brand, but there are some with beclamethasone or other agents that would work to decrease inflammation.

Response:

Two thoughts I had in reading your post: #1)  pain can also indicate infection…not always, but certainly sometimes. Maybe your doctor would want to you use antibiotics? #2)  not breast cancer, but my step-father had a throat tube for a lung biopsy procedure and it took a while for his own problems to be identified, but what actually happened is the throat tube nicked on of his vocal cords, causing pain…which finally healed, but then also caused another surgery to be required to fix the nicked vocal cord. Certainly not saying either of these is true in your case, just a couple of what-if type thoughts! Good luck to you, darlin’. Katy

Your throat shouldn’t hurt that bad. My surgery took several hours and my throat felt fine (to my surprise). Get Sucrets……they contain a numbing agent. Also you can get throat sprays that also have a numbing agent. Good luck with that!!–Alice
